Brigitte Kaandorp (1962) is a Dutch singer and theatre-entertainer. She made over ten theatre shows and released over 15 cd's. She won a Golden Harp (2006) and was knighted in the Order of Orange-Nassau (2009). She is well-known for her absurd humour and hilarious stories, but also sings sensitive songs with piano or ukelele. One of her well-known songs is: 'Living without fear' (1997).
Above song is a song of gratitude and a farewell song that Brigitte Kaandorp wrote for Queen Beatrix, after she announced her abdication (2013). The melody of the song is the French chanson by Jacques Brel: 'Don't abandon me'/'Laat me niet alleen' (1969).
Beatrix was Queen of the Netherlands for 33 years (1980-2013). She was known as professional, very hard-working, empathetic during disasters, pro-Europe and artistic; and for her radiant smile and big hats. She was succeeded in 2013 by her eldest son Willem-Alexander. In that year, around 80% of the Dutch people were in favour to have a king as Head of State (besides the parliamentary democracy).
In the song, some highlights and some difficult times of her reign are mentioned (in the video, more remarkable episodes during her reign are shown - like the riots during her Inauguration (1980); the Bijlmer disaster, when an airplane crashed into two flats (1992); the terrible fireworks explosion, destroying a whole district in Enschede (2000); and her eight grandchildren (born 2002-2007)).

The palace Drakensteyn ('Dragon Stone', in the province of Utrecht) was Beatrix's private residence before her inauguration as queen (with Prince Claus and their three sons) and again after she abdicated. Every Queen's Day (when the whole country celebrated her birthday) she visited a city and a village.
The times of mourning refer to the passing away of her husband Prince Claus (in 2002); her mother Queen Juliana (in 2004); and her father Prince Bernhard (in 2004). But also to her second son Prince Friso, who got into a coma because of a snowslide in 2012 (he later died in 2013).
During the minute of silence on Commemoration Day 2010 a man caused panic on Dam Square in Amsterdam (seeming to be an attack). On the opening-day of the Dutch parliament in 2010, a man threw a candlestick to the Golden Coach, damaging it. And on Queen's Day 2009 a man in Apeldoorn committed an assault on the whole Royal Family trying to crash his car into their open bus. He failed, but killed seven random bystanders (and himself).
Finally four small affairs of her latest years are mentioned. Edwin de Roy van Zuydewijn was married to one of her nieces and gave negative interviews about the Royal Family, causing a scandal. Her daughter-in-law Mabel (married to Prince Friso) was accused of knowing a criminal person. Her other daughter-in-law Máxima (married to Crown Prince Willem-Alexander), had problems because her father had been minister of Agriculture, during the dictatorial Videla-regime (Argentinia). The year before Beatrix's abdication, in 2012, the government decided that the King would no longer lead the formation of a new government.
The colour orange is the royal colour in the Netherlands, because the Royal Family is of the House of Orange-Nassau. Other songs about the Royal Family are: 'So beautiful' (2013); 'You are a king' (2013); and 'My heart will be orange for good' (2013).
