Liesbeth List (1941-2020) was born as Elisabeth Driessen. Her mother committed suicide shortly after the Second World War (she had been imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp in Indonesia). Liesbeth was eventually adopted by the List family on the isle of Vlieland (province of Friesland).
After moving to Amsterdam, singer Ramses Shaffy asked her to join the group Shaffy Chantant, which was very successful for many years. Liesbeth List recorded over 25 albums, mostly with ballads, translations of French chansons and other 'luisterliedjes' ('listening songs'). In 1969, Liesbeth List released an album with only Brel songs: Liesbeth List sings Jacques Brel/Liesbeth List zingt Jacques Brel. She received two Edison Music Awards (1971, 1995) and a Golden Harp (1998).
From 1999 onward, she played the role of the famous French singer Edith Piaf in the musical Piaf (1999-2000) and an older Piaf in the sequel (2009-2010). Both times Liesbeth List won the Kraaijkamp Musical Award for best leading role.

In 1999 she had again a big hit, with the chanson 'Be in love with life'. In 2017 List announced she ended her singing career, because of memory problems (due to brain damage after a car accident). In the same year her biography was published and a musical about her life and career was staged in the theatres.
The song 'Don't abandon me'/'Laat me niet alleen' (1969, in French: 'Ne me quitte pas') was written by the famous Belgium singer Jacques Brel (1929-1978). The French version of the song is still voted every year into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio in the last week of the year), as high as place 66/2000.
Some of Jacques Brel's greatest hits were 'Marieke' (1961); 'Le Plat Pays'/'My flat low land' (1962); Bruxelles/'Brussels' (1963); 'Amsterdam' (1964); and 'Les vieux amants'/'Long lasting love' (1967).
Ernst van Altena (1933-1999) was a poet and translator. Brel was so pleased with Altena's tranlations of his songs, that he granted Ernst van Altena the copyright of all his translated songs. This unique contract is worldwide still unparalleled till this day. Ernst van Altena received the Martinus Nijhoff Translation Award (1965) and the Hiëronymus Translation Award (1994) and he was knighted two times in France.
