Frans Halsema (1939-1984) was a Dutch cabaret artist and singer. In the Netherlands, 'cabaret' is a kind of theatre in which someone (or a group of comics), plays funny sketches and tells anecdotes (personal or critical about politics/society or just hilarious) with jokes and songs.
Frans Halsema joined the satirical cabaret-group Lurelei (1961-1964). He wrote songs, played the piano and later sang himself. After that he worked for the famous cabaret artist Wim Kan, made shows with Gerard Cox, Adèle Bloemendaal and Jenny Arean and played a role in the Dutch musical Now off to bed/En nu naar bed (by Annie M.G. Schmidt and Harry Bannink) in the years 1971-1973.
In the second half of the seventies Halsema had three solo cabaret shows in the theatre. He died too early, when he was only 44 years old.

Michel van der Plas (1927-2013) was a translater, writer and poet. He wrote songtexts for artists like Wim Sonneveld, Frans Halsema and Wim Kan.
Above song 'Kees' is about a fictive friend who died a year ago. The style is very remarkable: the lyrics are in everyday speech, with hesitations, taking back statements and using ordinary words and even swearwords. The content is about: not much seems to have changed, everything goes on as usual - only (when the narrator looks closer) many elements of the deceased friend are missing or have changed: his house has other curtains, his roses are neglected, his children ride on their bikes without their father.
Van der Plas mentions some things which are contemporary in 1971. For example: new politician Drees (son of the famous prime minister Drees); well-known columnist Simon Carmiggelt, who wrote columns between 1946-1987; and the Apollo program (1961-1972).
Harry Bannink (1929-1999) was a Dutch composer and pianist. He wrote the music for over 3000 songs, for many artists (like Wim Sonneveld and Wieteke van Dort), songs and musicals written by Annie M.G. Schmidt, theatre shows, radio- and tv-shows, and radio- and tv-shows for children. He is widely considered the best composer for cabaret, television shows and stage songs.
