Boudewijn de Groot (1944) is one of Netherlands's most famous singers, songwriters and composers. De Groot met lyrics writer Lennaert Nijgh (1945-2002) during high school and in 1964 he recorded some of their songs, but success stayed out. Also an album with covers and own songs (1965) didn't do much.
In 1966 they released the album For the survivors/Voor de overlevenden, with songs Lennaert Nijgh wrote about his childhood and early loves (with songs like 'Testament', 'Drowned butterfly'/'Verdronken vlinder', and 'Without friends I cannot live'/ 'Zonder vrienden kan ik niet'). It was an immense success, they won a Platinum Record and an Edison Music Award. The next year they achieved a number one position with the single 'The countryside of Maas and Waal'/'Het land van Maas en Waal'.
The song was in the National Hit Parade Top 40 for ten weeks (highest position: 11). It's still voted every year into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year), as high as place 47/2000. No less than 17 of De Groot's hits have been voted into the Top 2000 over the years.

In 1968 they released the hippie-album Picknick, with psychedelic lyrics and music (inspired by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's) with songs like 'Eva' and 'Prikkebeen'. After some years writing for other artists and little contact, De Groot and Nijgh had again success together with the L.P. How strong is the lonely biker/Hoe sterk is de eenzame fietser (1973). Again awarded with a Platinum Record and an Edison Music Award.
In the following decades, De Groot produced many records and wrote songs for other artists (like Rob de Nijs, Hans de Booij and Henny Vrienten), besides own singles and records, and he played the leading role in the musical Tsjechov (1991-1993).
In 1996 he worked again with Lennaert Nijgh, leading to the album A new autumn/Een nieuwe herfst. One of Boudewijn de Groot's greatest hits was 'Evening'/'Avond' (1997), which was written by Lennaert Nijgh in 1973.
