Tom Manders (stage name: Dorus) (1921-1972) was a Dutch comedian. He started his career as designer of theatre sets, for artists like Lou Bandy, Heintje Davids and Wim Kan.
In the 1950's he started to make his own theatre shows as comedian. One of his characters in his shows was the vagabond Dorus. He made two shows with musician Cor Steyn and several of their songs became well-known, like 'My vegetable garden'/'M'n volkstuintje' (1957) and 'Let's join the navy'/'Bij de marine' (1958). In 1967 he won a Silver Rose of Montreux.
Cor Steyn (1906-1965) was a pianist and composer. After the conservatory he started to play the piano with silent movies. Later he wrote film music, worked for radio and television and accompanied many artists in their shows. He also composed the song 'When on the Leidseplein' (1943).

Manders sings the above song 'Twee motten' (1956) with a clear Amsterdam accent, which places the character Dorus with the common people. In the song he uses wordplays and rhyming words. For example: 'cute moths' ('dotten van motten') rhymes, 'I spotted the holes' ('de gaten in de gaten') is a homonym, just as 'a moth has got to live' ('een mot toch leven mot'). Of course the whole content of the song is meant to be funny.
The song has been voted into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year) ten times.
Thirty-five years after Tom Manders passed away, his son Tom Manders jr. (a director and producer) made a television documentary about his father (2007). Manders jr. was also known for writing the hit 'Being close'/'Samen zijn' (1987), sung by Willeke Alberti.
