De Kast ('the cupboard', 1992) is a pop group from Friesland. They sing both in Frisian and in Dutch. Regular band members are Syb van der Ploeg (singer), Peter van der Ploeg (his cousin), Kees Bode and Sytse Broersma.
The band first became popular in Friesland. The song 'In nije dei', on their second album, was written for a Frisian movie. It became a big national hit. It was in het National Hit Parade Top 40 for 18 weeks (and reached the second place).
This was the first national hit ever in the Frisian language. The song is still voted every year into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year), as high as place 108/2000.

De Kast released over 10 albums. Their biggest hits, besides 'In nije dei' (1996), were 'Words without words'/'Woorden zonder woorden' (1998); 'In the clouds'/'In de wolken' (1999); and 'Core of my feelings'/'Hart van mijn gevoel' (1999). They won the Frisian Pop Award (1997), an Edison Music Award (1998) and a Golden Harp (2001).
Frisian is spoken in Friesland (Frisia), a province in the north of the Netherlands. Although Frisian is a Germanic language, like Dutch (and e.g. English, German, Danish and Swedish) the Dutch can't automatically understand Frisian. So although the song became very popular, many people didn't understand the meaning of the song.
Another Frisian song that became a national hit, that's also translated and included on this website, is 'Where are you'/'Wêr bisto'. See also the list of all songs in a regional language.
More translated Dutch songs in the genre 'ballad' and more with the theme 'love songs' or all songs in a regional language. See also the list of Dutch bands with all their songs on this website.
