Twarres (1999, meaning something like 'twosome, pair') is a duo from Friesland (or Frisia), singing both in Frisian and in English. The first two members were Mirjam Timmer (1982) and Johan van der Veen (1981). In 2007 however, Johan got problems with singing and playing the guitar. It turned out he had a progressive muscular disease. He had to end his musical career and was replaced by Kristian Dijkstra.
In 1999 Twarres won the public vote of the Frisian Song Festival with the song 'Wêr bisto'. As a result they could record the song as a single. They were asked to play the song during a television show and after that singer Marco Borsato asked them to play it during his concerts. In this way the song became popular nationwide.

The song reached the number one position in the National Hit Parade Top 40. It was the first Frisian number-one-song and it remained six weeks on that position. Beside this enourmous success in the Netherlands, it also became a hit in Flanders, Belgium (four weeks on the number one position).
The song is still voted every year into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year), as high as place 213/2000. Twarres won an Edison Music Award in 2002. They released two albums so far and seven singles.
Another Frisian song that became a national hit, that's also translated and included on this website, is 'A brand new day'/'In nije dei'. See also the list of all songs in a regional language.
