Normaal ('Normal', 1974-2015) was a Dutch rockband that sang in a Dutch dialect, the 'Achterhoeks' (officially 'Nedersaksisch': Low Saxon). This is a region language in the province of Gelderland, in the east of the Netherlands. Singer and guitarist of the band was Bennie Jolink. Other long-lasting members were Jan Manschot (drums) and Ferdi Joly (guitar).
During their first big show in Lochem (in the Achterhoek) in 1975, the rock band started to sing in the regional language. This was completely new and an instant success. Two years later they had a big national hit with the song 'Crazy fast' (or 'Extremely fast')/'Oerend hard' (1977). This is considered to be the beginning of the dialect pop and the farmer's rock.
In 40 years Normaal released over 40 records. They called their fans 'super farmers'/'superboeren', they called their tours 'campaigns'/'veldtochten', during concerts beer was spouted with fire hoses and their favorite expression was 'høken', which means as much as having fun, partying, blowing your mind.

Many of their songs praise the rough and hard working farmer's life. The lyrics are about being proud of being a farmer, the harsh, unrefined life in the country, and despising the life in the city, the posh politicians in The Hague and the arrogant Dutchmen ('Hollanders') in the west of the country.
The songs also praise though and bold activities like riding a motor bike, drinking beer, listening to rock music and party a lot. In this way, Normaal gave a big boost to the self-confidence and pride of the farmers and countrymen.
The above song 'Achterhook boogie' (1981) was in the National Hit Parade Top 40 for three weeks. The Boogiewoogie is a swinging dance music style or a rock and roll dance. The mentioned names like Benjo and Gaspiepe were nicknames the band members gave each other. 'Henkie Haverkamp' was a character from another hit ('Hendrik Haverkamp') about a singing farmer, who was run over by a car, but kept singing anyway.
No less than 46 of Normaal's singles reached the national top 40 (which is remarkable, because outside the Achterhook no one understood the meaning of the lyrics in the Low Saxon language - and the Achterhook is only a small part of the province Gelderland, with just about 380.000 inhabitants). Also three of their hits have been voted into the Top 2000 ('Ali', 'Thundering on'/'Deurdonderen' and 'Crazy fast'/Oerend hard - the latter as high as place 82 out of 2000).
