Kees Pruis (1889-1957), was a Dutch singer and comedian, who was mainly famous during the 1920's and 1930's. He started as singer in revues (from 1914 onward) and later also sang on the radio. He was known for cheerful songs and hilarious skits in the theatres.
Some of his well-know songs are: 'Those who can't sleep'/'Zij die niet slapen' (1921); 'Where do I live'/'Waar woon ik' (1925); 'I have a nail in my shoe'/'Ik heb een spijker in mijn schoen' (1931); and 'Oh sergeant, they stole my socks'/'O sergeant, ze hebben mijn sokken gestolen' (1939).

The above song 'Mariandel' (1949) is a translation of the German song 'Mariandl' (1942). This is a song from the music play The violinist of the Court Council/Der Hofrat Geiger (1942). The play was adapted for screen in 1947 (in this film, the song is sung by Maria Andergast). A second film was made in 1961, Mariandl, and now the song was sung by Conny Froboess.
The name Mariandl means in German: 'little Marianne'. In Dutch the name Mariandel is in fact non-existing.
The song was recorded many times over the years, both in German and Dutch. For example by: Frans van Schaik, Bob Scholte, Eddy Christiani, Jan en Mien Froger, Maria Andergast, Waltraud Haas and Conny Froboess. The song was also translated in English by Eric Maschwitz and sung by Petula Clark and Jimmy Young in 1951.
