Ramses Shaffy (1933-2009) was a Dutch actor, singer and songwriter. He was the son of an Egyptian consul and a Polish countess, but due to his parent's divorce and illness of his mother, he grew up with a foster family in Leiden.
In 1964 Shaffy formed the theatre group Shaffy Chantant. One of the members was singer Liesbeth List, with whom he made theatrical tours for over ten years. Big hits (beside above song) were his/their songs 'Sammy' (1966); 'Pastoral song'/'Pastorale' (1969); 'Sing, fight, cry, pray'/'Zing, vecht, huil, bid' (1971); and 'We will go one'/'We zullen doorgaan' (1975).
The above song 'Let me'/'Laat me' (1978) was written by Herman Pieter de Boer on the French chanson 'Ma dernière volonté', or 'Vivre' (Serge Reggiani, 1977). It's not a translation, De Boer wrote the lyrics especially for Shaffy, fitting his way of life perfectly. Ramses Shaffy was known as a free spirit, who never tried to fit in civil life, in society.

The single was in the Top 40 for six weeks and still is voted every year into the Top 2000 (traditionally broadcasted on the radio the last week of the year); as high as place 10/2000.
In 2006 a cd-box with eight cd's was released with all his songs. During that event, Ramses Shaffy received an Edison Music Award for his complete oeuvre. The last ten years of his life he suffered from Korsakoff's syndrome, due to excessive alcohol use. Nevertheless he still performed his songs on stage until november 2009, just days before his death.
Herman Pieter de Boer (1928-2014) was a Dutch writer and lyrics writer. His most well-known songs are: 'Let me'/'Laat me' (for Ramses Shaffy); 'Visitors'/'Visite' (for Lenny Kuhr); 'Annabel' (for Hans de Booij); 'On an uninhabited island'/'Op een onbewoond eiland' and 'I dreamed so insanely tonight'/'Ik heb zo waanzinnig gedroomd' (for national teenagers choir Children for Children). In 2002 he was awarded with a Golden Harp.
