Johnny Hoes (1917-2011) was a Dutch singer, songwriter and producer from Rotterdam. During World War II (1940-1945) as a soldier (conscription service) he played guitar and organised music evenings. After the war he started to write songs, first about the liberation and later cowboy and party songs. In 1952, Eddy Christiani had a hit with one of his songs. This was his break-through as songwriter.
In 1948 Hoes opened a music shop in Weert (Limburg). He started to scout for new talent, that wanted to sing his cheerful party songs. In 1954 he started a music publishing company (Benelux Music) and in 1963 a music production company (Telstar), specialised in Dutch-language songs. From 1965 onward he hosted the musical television show A laugh and a tear/Een lach en een traan.
He started or gave a push to the careers of artists like: Frits Rademacher, de Zangeres Zonder Naam, Anneke Grönloh, Rob de Nijs, Normaal, Dennie Christian, Henk Wijngaard, Doe Maar, Toontje Lager, Pierre Kartner and Ria Valk.

Some well-known songs of his hand are: 'Heart of a seaman'/'Zeemanshart' (1952); 'Father, what has become of mother'/'Vader waar is moeder gebleven' (1962); 'That is the end of it'/'Dat is 't einde' (1965); and 'French fries with mayonnaise'/'Friet met mayonaise' (1974). He also produced the 'Chicken Dance'/'Vogeltjesdans' (1980), which became an international hit (in over 20 languages), selling more than 35 million records world wide.
The above song 'Oh no, I should have stayed home with my mother'/'Och, was ik maar bij moeder thuisgebleven' (1961) was written in 1960 by Frans Boermans in Limburgian dialect and later re-written by him in standard Dutch. The single, sung by Johnny Hoes, sold over 450.000 copies, making it the best selling Dutch single in the 20th century. It was in the Top 40 for 36 weeks (12 weeks on number 1) and won two times a Platinum Record.
Johnny Hoes wrote over 5000 party songs, sing-along songs, 'life songs', tear-jerkers and carnival songs. His company Telstar received about 300 Golden or Platinum Records.
