Rudi Carrell (1934-2006), stage name of Rudolf Kesselaar, was a Dutch singer, actor and tv host. He primarily had a career in Germany.
His father André Carrell also was an actor and made comical shows for the theatre. Rudi Carrell replaced him sometimes and then was asked for a comical show on the radio. In 1959 he switched to television and got his own television programme: the Rudi Carrell Show (1961-1968). For this show he received both the Nipkow Disc and the Silver Rose of Montreux.
From 1965 onward he was very successful in Germany for 40 years. He continuously made (comical) television shows, until 2005. He was both in the Netherlands and in Germany honoured for his contribution to the improvement of the Dutch-German relations (Bundesverdienstkreuz in 1985, Dutch royal Ribbon of Honour in 2001).

The song 'It's such a luck'/'Wat een geluk' he sang at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960. Unfortunately, due to technical problems, he sang a part of the song false and ended second last. However, it became a hit in the Netherlands anyway (place nine in the Hit Parade Top 40). The song not only has a cheerful and jazzy melody, but the text is also full of internal rhyme (rhyme within the line), alliteration and word plays.
Other more or less well-known songs are: 'A little balloon'/'Een ballonnetje', 'A mouse in a mill'/'Een muis in een molen', 'It's high time'/'De hoogste tijd' and 'A little stroll together'/'Samen een straatje om'.
In 2005 Rudi Carrell was diagnosed with lung cancer - he always had been a heavy smoker. He died in 2006, 71 years old. In 2007 his statue, a bust, was revealed in Alkmaar, the city where he was born.
