Johnny Jordaan (1924-1989), stage name of Johannes van Musscher, was a Dutch singer, famous for singing 'life songs' ('levenslied'): songs about the common people and the hardship of life. He was every inch an Amsterdammer, from the district the Jordaan. He sings with a clear Amsterdam accent.
Another of his well-known songs is: 'In our own Jordaan'/'Bij ons in de Jordaan' (1955).
The city of Amsterdam was and still is refered to as 'Mokum', the Hebrew word for 'city'. This originates from the many Jewish inhabitants Amsterdam had before the Second World War. The Amstel is a river in North-Holland and flows right through Amsterdam (the historical dam in the Amstel gave Amsterdam, as medieval little fishing village, it's name). The IJ is nowadays part of the lake the IJsselmeer (original the Southern Sea) and here was the historical harbour of Amsterdam.

The Jordaan is a quarter (neighbourhood) in Amsterdam. It is known as a real working-class quarter ('volksbuurt') with small alleys and small houses; and popular for it's many café's, shops and markets.
In the 20th century, the neighbourhood the Jordaan had many singers, known for their easy recognizable 'life songs' ('levenslied') about the common people, the hardship of life, and the love for Amsterdam ('Mokum') and the Jordaan. Besides Johnny Jordaan for example: Willy Alberti, Manke Nelis and Tante Leen. They sang lamenting with whines and whimpers, with an Amsterdam accent, often accompanied by accordions.
Other 'life-songs' ('levensliederen') from the Jordaan in Amsterdam, translated on this website, are: 'In the Jordaan'/'In de Jordaan' (1917); 'My choice is Amsterdam'/'Bij ons in de Jordaan' (1955); and 'At the foot of the Western Tower'/'Aan de voet van die oude Wester' (1957).
More translated Dutch songs in the genre 'life songs' ('levenslied') and more with the theme 'narrative songs' or 'songs about Dutch cities'. See also the list of Dutch singers with all their songs on this website.
