Lou Bandy (1890-1959), stage name of Lodewijk Dieben, was a Dutch comedian, revue star and one of the most beloved singers in the period of the interbellum, the 1920's and 1930's. He was the brother of Willy Derby. They grew up in The Hague. They first performed as a duo, The Bandy Brothers, but broke up because of quarrels. Although his songs were very cheerful, Lou Bandy had a difficult personality.

As a young boy, Lou Bandy sang at the markets and in the streets of The Hague. Later he joined the revue (always wearing his characteristic straw hat). In between his songs, he made jokes and improvised funny -sometimes crude- anecdotes. Lou Bandy also played in several movies, like The girl with the blue hat/Het meisje met de blauwe hoed (1934) and Life is not that bad/Het leven is niet zo kwaad (1935).

In 1921 he married pianist player Eugenie Küch. She had a big influence on his career: she motivated him to speak Dutch without a Hague accent, taught him more manners and introduced him in the theatres. Most of his songs were written by lyricist Ferry van Delden and Bandy's wife Eugenie Küch.

Some of his most well-known songs are (beside above song): 'Plunge in sunshine'/'Zoek de zon op' (1936); 'Who put sugar in the green pea soup'/'Wie heeft er suiker in de erwtensoep gedaan' (song for soldiers) (1939); 'Ratatouille with beans'/'Rats, kuch en bonen' ('The soldier's dinner') (1939); and 'Louise, stop biting your nails'/'Louise, zit niet op je nagels te bijten' (1946). Above song refers to the Great Depression ('the crisis'), the worldwide economic depression in the 1930's.

In 1942 Lou Bandy was arrested two times by the Nazi occupation government and put in a hostage camp. The second time he tried to kill himself. For the remaining years of the Second World War (until 1945), he had house arrest.

In 1944 both his wife and his brother Willy Derby died. After the war, he was still successful for a while, but the revue was out of date and in the 1950's he became more and more forgotten. He married two more times, with very young girls, and got psychiatric problems after his last divorce. In 1959 he committed suicide, 69 years old. He was burried next to his first wife.
