Dutch song Kinderen voor Kinderen - De Lek
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

For years, even last year
Dad and I often made bike rides
Here along the river Lek
Where the dikes are long and narrow
And you had to pay attention
'Cause sometimes a car was passing, grazing by insanely fast
When we took a break, we sat upon a fence
Cows behind us in the meadow
Ships before us, floating slowly
And we were not even talking
'Cause we understood each other
And my father took a puff so now and then
'Cause my father smoked tabaco all his life

Vroeger, vorig jaar nog
Ging ik met m'n vader samen
Dikwijls fietsen langs de Lek
Over hele smalle dijken
Want m'n vader rookte altijd zware sjek

Later, also last year
Father very unexpected
Fell ill, he had some disease
He stayed home, but after two weeks
When he still threw up and felt sick
Then they took him to the hospital to check him finally
And it turned out to be much worse than he thought
First he shared a room with strangers
With three other, random patients
Soon he got a single room, where
We were sitting all around him
The disease was getting stronger every day
Till he finally just passed away one night

Later, vorig jaar nog
Is m'n vader ziek geworden
Dat kwam nogal onverwacht
Veertien dagen thuisgebleven

Almost every day now
I am thinking of my father
And I quickly count to ten
Trying to restrain myself and
To hold back my tears, my sorrow
I don't want to show my sadness, I feel childish when I cry
But at seven I am weeping usually
When mum notices again
I blow my nose and pile up tissues
She will say: "Just try it, buddy
Go outside, enjoy yourself once
On your bike perhaps along the river Lek"
But I never want to see the Lek again

Bijna elke dag nog
Moet ik aan m'n vader denken
En dan tel ik gauw tot tien
Doe m'n best me in te houden

Kinderen voor Kinderen ('Children for Children', 1980) is a Dutch national children's choir. Every year, since 1980, they release an album with new children's songs for the age of 8 till 13. Every year schoolchildren in that age range are asked what the subjects of the songs should be (like friendship, holiday, pets, starting secondary school, shyness, boredom, handicaps, divorce, war, illness, falling in love, acne, bullying, homework, etc.).

Well-known songwriters, lyricists and composers are asked to write one or two songs for a new record. Contributors were for example: Harry Bannink, Herman Pieter de Boer, Jan Boerstoel, Claudia de Breij, Tonny Eyk, Robert Long, Henk Temming, Henk Westbroek, Willem Wilmink and Ivo de Wijs.

The choir was set up to raise money for charity (especially for children in the Third World) - that explains the name of the choir. Since the 1990's, the choir no longer supports charities. Every year the songs are presented in a big TV-show, just before the new album is launched. This TV-show is also released on dvd.

The choir Children for Children/Kinderen voor Kinderen won 1 time a Diamond Album, 11 times a Platinum Album and 4 times a Golden Album (in 38 years). No less than seven singles (although they're not pop songs) reached the National Hit Parade Top 40. Above song is sung by Matthijs van der Wel.

Jan Boerstoel (1944) is a Dutch poet and lyricist. He was awarded with the Louis Davids Award, a Golden Harp and the Annie M.G. Schmidt Award for the song 'No longer a child'/'Geen kind meer' (1996).

Harry Bannink (1929-1999) was a Dutch composer and pianist. He wrote the music for over 3000 songs, like theatre and musical songs and children's songs. Some well-known songs are: 'What's the weather today in The Hague' (1966); and 'My granddad' (1967).
