Dutch song Boudewijn de Groot - Avond
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

From now on you don't have to put on your coat
Hoping that your bike lights work alright
Let outside the storm winds sweep and rage now in the darkness
'Cause inside it is warm and light and good
Hand in hand we're looking through the window to the rain
I see the fire of hope and doubt both in your eyes now
And I know your deepest fear

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

'Cause you never can be sure, no, and everything will pass
But I believe, I believe, I believe
I believe, I believe in you and me

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

You get up in the morning, and I'll be there
And maybe I made a cup of tea
And when outside the sun shines we will walk here in the sand dunes
And when the rain falls we go back to bed
Hours to wake up so slowly, floating through the time
I see the light fall through the curtains and I know
The past will never guarantee

'Cause you never can be sure, no, and everything will pass
But I believe, I believe, I believe
I believe, I believe in you and me
I believe, I believe, I believe

I put out all the lights and the room is filled with darkness
The glimmer of a streetlamp gives some light
And the objects in the room they become friends who go to sleep now
The chairs wait patiently for breakfast-time

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

Tomorrow I will wake up with the smell of bread and honey
The glow of golden sunlight in your hair
And the objects in the room, I wish them all good night now
We go to sleep this evening, tomorrow we shall see

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

But the objects in the room would just be lifeless objects, nothing more
Without you

Zonder jou

And you never can be sure, no, 'cause everything will pass
But I believe, I believe, I believe
I believe, I believe in you and me
I believe, I believe, I believe
I believe, I believe in you and me

Boudewijn de Groot (1944) is one of Netherlands most famous singers, songwriters and composers. De Groot met lyrics writer Lennaert Nijgh (1945-2002) during high school and in 1964 he recorded some of their songs, but success stayed out. Also an album with covers and own songs (1965) didn't do much.

In 1966 they released the album For the survivors/Voor de overlevenden, with songs Lennaert Nijgh wrote about his childhood and early loves (with songs like 'Testament' and 'Drowned butterfly'/'Verdronken vlinder'. It was an immense success, they won a Platinum Record and an Edison Music Award. In 1968 they released the hippie-album Picknick, with psychedelic lyrics and music, with songs like 'Eva' and 'Prikkebeen'.

In the following decades, De Groot produced many records and wrote songs for other artists (like Rob de Nijs, Hans de Booij and Henny Vrienten), besides own singles and records, and he played the leading role in the musical Tsjechov (1991-1993).

In 1996 he worked again with Lennaert Nijgh, leading to the album A new autumn/Een nieuwe herfst. One of Boudewijn de Groot's greatest hits was 'Evening'/'Avond' (1996), which was written by Lennaert Nijgh in 1973 for his wife at that time Anja. Later Boudewijn de Groot married this same Anja (in 1995, Nijgh was his best man). After his marriage, De Groot wrote new music for the song and recorded it in 1996.

The song has been the most popular Dutch song for most editions of the yearly radio Top 2000 and ended on the first place of the ranking in 2005.

The linked songs are also translated and included on this website.
