Dutch song Oh Sixteen Oh Seven (01607) - Het leven is goed
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

In Brabant life always is pleasant and good
My cradle stood here in these lands
My heart I have pledged to this country for good
My love for this land is heartfelt

The lavender heathland, the marsh lands, the woods
A village that fits in your hand
The Peel and the Kempen and the Meijerij
My lovely Brabantian land

Mijn heerlijke Brabantse land

My regular table is here in this pub
A square with old oak trees around
A brass band of farmers plays loud in the street
My lovely Brabantian land

Dat kleine café waar mijn stamtafel staat
Een pleintje met bomen omrand
De boerenkapel speelt een deuntje op straat
Mijn heerlijke Brabantse land

My youth lies here, I feel I know everyone
We don't care about wealth, social class
We're all feeling rich, even if you are poor
My lovely Brabantian land

Mijn heerlijke Brabantse land

In Brabant our mother did raise us as kids
My easy-going, friendly land
The people live life to the fullest 'round here
My honest and wonderful
Powerful, beautiful
Welcoming Brabantine land

Mijn vriendelijk gemoedelijke land
Mijn eerlijke, heerlijke
Machtige, prachtige
Gastvrije Brabantse land

Oh Sixteen Oh Seven (or: 01607) was a Dutch band from the province of Brabant in the 1970's and 1980's. The band had seven band members, for example: Clemens Duijnstee and Thijs van der Molen (singer). They all met at the brass band of Prinsenbeek, Amor Musae.

The name 01607 is the area dialling code of the village they all lived: Prinsenbeek, near Breda (North-Brabant). The band released only three other songs, under which: 'Orange for ever'/'Oranje boven' and 'Olé olé lala' (1980).

Above song was a big national hit. It was in the Top 40 for nine weeks. The single was released in the weeks before the carnival, which in Brabant is celebrated extensively for three days in February. But the song didn't turn out to be only a carnival hit ('carnavalskraker') or party song, but it became an evergreen, still very much beloved in Brabant.

The song led to a lawsuit, because some musical measures seemed to resemblance a part of the song 'My Brabant'/'Mijn Brabant' by Laetantius en Hildebrand. Above this, producer Ad Kramer changed one word of the lyrics and so also became a rightful claimant of the earnings. Only thirty years later, copyright organisation Buma/Stemra confirmed there is no indication of plagiarism. But the real songwriters weren't paid with retroactive effect.

The province of Brabant (officially North-Brabant, because the southern part is situated in nowadays Belgium) lies in the south of the Netherlands. The name means 'swampy or muddy area' ('braec bant'). The region language is Brabants, a Low Franconian language ('Nederfrankisch'). The lyrics mention three areas: De Peel, a raised bog or wetland ('hoogveen'); De Kempen, a big area with sandy heath lands and shallow meres; and the Meierij, the bailiwick (the area of jurisdiction) of the former Duke of Brabant.
