with lyrics, music and English translation songtext

Oh darling
When we are together
I kiss you to pieces
How long ago is it that we met
I might become crazy
Oh please, make it better
I wait here almost about ten years

Oh darling
When we are together
I kiss you te pletter
How long heb ik jou niet meer gezien
Ik word hier nog knetter
Oh please, make it better
I wait here al haast een jaar of tien

I have a car
I have a car
I have a farm
I have a farm
I have a house
Hooo
Hm, that's nice and warm

I have a car
I have a car
I have a farm
I have a farm
I have a house
Hooo
Hm, that's lekker warm

He left his country when he was quite young
She stayed behind, that made her very sad
His love for her just could not be extinguished
But that quite large sea was in between them
Then she received his letter suddenly
I miss you, I come back, I love you so

Hij was nog jong toen hij zijn land verliet
Zij bleef alleen, dat deed haar veel verdriet
Zijn liefde was voor haar toch niet te blussen
Maar die grote zee die zat ertussen
En op een dag kreeg zij van hem een brief
I miss you, I come back, ik heb je lief

She quickly took the train to Rotterdam
Was waving to him when the boat arrived
He'd written to her: "Darling sweetheart, look out for
A man with a guitar and a quite big cowboy hat"
And then he saw a smiling pair of eyes
And from the balustrade he sang for her

Theo Diepenbrock (1932) is a Dutch singer, who had several hits in the 1970's and 1980's. Some he recorded as part of a group or duo, like Theo & zijn Troubadours; Theo & de Pipo's; and Theo en Marjan.

His real family name was Piepenbroek (literally something like: 'peeping pants'), so he named himself after composer Alphons Diepenbrock. Some modest hits were 'Hey darling, did you know'/'Hé schat, weet je dat' (1972); 'Hela, come with me, yes'/'Hela, kom met me mee, ja' (1972); 'With my eyes closed'/'Met gesloten ogen' (1976); 'Victoria' (1979); and 'Fortunate in love'/'Geluk in de liefde' (1984).

Diepenbrock's most successful song 'Oh darling' (1978) was listed in the national hit parade Top 40 for 10 weeks. The highest position was number five. It is a bilingual song: Dutch is mixed with English. Words from both languages rhyme with each other, like: together-te pletter, better-knetter and farm-warm.

More well-known songs are bilingual. The most famous example is the English-French 'Michelle' by The Beatles ('ma belle, these are words...', 1965). Other examples in Dutch are: 'Paris'/'Parijs' by Kenny B (Dutch-French, 2015); 'My rose: garden in my heart'/'Mi rowsu: tuintje in mijn hart' by Jan Smit (Dutch-Surinamese, 2009); and 'White dove'/'Paloma blanca' by George Baker (English-Spanish, 1975).
