For months you looked so forward to the summer
The wintertime was cold and wouldn't end
All the weeks were passing by so slowly
But finally, there it appeared, the sun
The nights are short, the days are long
The mornings full of singing birds
Mosquitos with their shrill and piercing sound
And you think, ah, it has begun
And it will last a century at least
But people, oh, the time will pass so fast

Summertime once again is ending
This summer almost did set in in May
Oh, it seemed to be a summer without ending
This lovely time however will be gone before you know

Those months the world was full of life and sunlight
The scent of herring mixed with sunburn creme
A parasol to filter the bright sunshine
And in your clothes you felt the scraping sand
We just played golf and pétanque boules
Enjoyed sunbathing in a chair
And floated on the river with a raft
We were enormous spoiled for weeks
But well, once everything will end
Now I'm just watching dia's chilly in the rain

We werden wekenlang verwend
Maar ach, aan alles komt een end
Nu zit ik met mijn dia's in de regen hier

Now the autumn's colouring the tree leaves
I'm wearing my pajamas now again
You should have been here in the midst of July
Each night we slept outside here on the beach
And fishing in the peep of day
And swimming as far as you could
And sailing with a boat upon the sea
So sad that it's all over now
It all became a memory
And that's what keeps us going in the winter days

Herfst verkleurt weer langzaam alle bomen
'k Heb 's nachts allang weer mijn pyjama an
't Is allemaal herinnering

The song 'Summertime once again is ending'/''t Is weer voorbij die mooie zomer' (1973) was a big hit. It had a number 1 position in the Top 40 hit parade for five weeks. Gerard Cox wrote the songtext on the melody of the American song 'City of New Orleans' by Steve Goodman. It's not a translation, the English lyrics are about New Orleans.

The song is still on the radio traditionally at the end of August and in September and became in this way an evergreen for the changing of these seasons.
