Dutch song Herman van Veen - Cirkels
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

Round like the recent pale-red wine stain
On the dirty table-cloth
Like the golden drops of sunlight
Playing on the cobble path
And the wrinkles in the puddles
And the spider's catching net
These are nothing more than circles
Without ending or begin
And the time wears down the seasons
With the arrows of the clock
They are grinding all the hours
Almost noiseless, without shock
And no medicine can cure
Being lonely, being old

Rond als de wijnvlek van eergister
Op het vuile tafelblad
Spelen gouden druppels zonlicht
Op het koude tegelpad
En de rimpels in de vijver
En het vangnet van een spin
Zijn allemaal maar cirkels
Zonder einde of begin
En de tijd verslijt de dagen
Met de wijzers van de klok
Die de uren traag vermalen
Heel geruisloos, zonder schok
Er bestaat geen medicijn
Tegen oud of eenzaam zijn

When you're looking through your lashes
To the sinking sun at dusk
You see cheerful yellow sparkles
Like the blossom in the spring
And the starlight in your eyes seems
To make bright stripes in the sky
But as soon as night approaches
All your dreams flee and get lost
Due to arrows, bent and crooked
Grinding time continuously
Thus the summer is in pieces
'Cause the clock will never fail
And no medicine can cure
Being lonely, being old

's Avonds als je door je wimpers
Soms de zon ziet ondergaan
In een feest van gele vonken
Die in bloei lijken te staan
En de sterren op je netvlies
Trekken strepen in de lucht
Maar zodra de nacht weer nadert
Slaan je dromen op de vlucht
Door een klok met kromme wijzers
Die de tijd in stukken maalt
Ligt de zomer weer aan flarden
Want de klok heeft niet gefaald
Er bestaat geen medicijn
Tegen oud of eenzaam zijn

Count the pebbles you collected
In your pockets, round and smooth
But you lost the one you loved most
Through your own and stupid fault
You were with her on the beach and
Most of the shells seemed to be gems
But now you see only boulders
Big and grey and everywhere
Hear the whisper in the rustle
Of the ever restless sea:
"If you simply could not miss her
Why did you not leave with her"
You saw, when the summer parted
What the danger was at last
By then leafs turned yellow
Like her honey-yellow hair

The wrinkles in the puddles
The woven spider webs
Just some circles that surround us
Without ending or begin
In an infinite refrain
Still no medicine can cure
Being lonely, being old

De rimpels in de vijver
De webben van een spin
Zomaar cirkels in de ruimte
Zonder einde of begin
In een eindeloos refrein
Er bestaat geen medicijn
Tegen oud of eenzaam zijn
