with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch songs translated English translation

Every sunday he dropped by with toffees just for me
I remember all the games that granddad played with me
Playing 'restaurant' and sure my granddad was the cook
Playing 'billy-goat cart' en my granddad was the buck

Elke zondagmiddag bracht ie toffies voor me mee
Ik weet nog de spelletjes die opa met me dee
Restaurantje spelen en m'n opa was de kok
Bokkewagen spelen en m'n opa was de bok

My granddad, my granddad, my granddad
Nowhere in Europe you could find someone like him
My granddad, my granddad, my granddad
And no one was more friendly to me
Nowhere in Europe, my own old granddad
Nowhere in Europe, my own old granddad
Nowhere was someone like him
Nowhere in Europe, my own old granddad
No one more friendly to me
Nowhere in Europe, my own old granddad
Nowhere was someone like him
No one more friendly to me
My own old granddad

M'n opa, m'n opa, m'n opa
In heel Europa was er niemand zo als hij
M'n opa, m'n opa, m'n opa
En niemand was zo aardig voor mij
In heel Europa, m'n ouwe opa
In heel Europa, m'n ouwe opa
Nergens zo iemand als hij
In heel Europa, m'n ouwe opa
Niemand zo aardig voor mij
In heel Europa, m'n eigen opa
Nergens zo iemand als hij
Niemand zo aardig voor mij
M'n ouwe opa

When I felt so bored, I always went to visit him
He came up with little games, he never was too tired
Rolling from the dike and sure my granddad was the dike
Playing for 'detective' and my granddad was the corpse

Als ik me verveelde, ging ik altijd naar hem toe
Hij verzon een spelletje en nooit was ie te moe
Van de dijk afrollen en m'n opa was de dijk
Detectiefie spelen en m'n opa was het lijk

Watching monkeys in the zoo, together to the beach
And if you were lucky, we saw a real house on fire
Skating with the two of us or sleighing in the snow
Playing 'lion tamer' and my granddad was the lion
When we were together we had always so much fun
Playing for 'matador' and my granddad was the bull

Hetty Blok (1920-2012) was a Dutch singer, actress and comedian. She performed in many stage shows and television series. Her most well-known role is the singing nurse in the successful television series Ja zuster, nee zuster/Yes sister, no sister (1966-1968), written by Annie M.G. Schmidt, with music by Harry Bannink.

Leen Jongewaard (1927-1996) was a Dutch actor and singer. He is most known for his roles in television series like The sheep with the 5 legs/'t Schaep met de 5 pooten (1969-1970) and A lemon with sugar/Citroentje met suiker (1972-1974). In Ja zuster, nee zuster he played the role of granddad.

In the series Yes nurse, no nurse/Ja zuster, nee zuster (1966-1968) they sang (besides this song 'M'n opa'/'My granddad') more songs like 'In een rijtuigje'/'In a carriage', 'Wil u een stekkie van de fuchsia'/ 'Would you like a sprout of the fuchsia', and 'Samen met u onder een paraplu'/ 'Together with you under an umbrella'.

Annie M.G. Schmidt (1911-1995) was one of the most beloved text writers of the Netherlands. She wrote children's books and poetry, poetry for adults, songs, plays and musicals. She is known for her humor and talent for seemingly easy rhyming.

More of her (translated) songtexts on this website: 'But most, most of all', 'Marjolijne', 'What's the weather today in The Hague', 'In a carriage', and 'At a lovely Whitsunday'.

Harry Bannink (1929-1999) was a Dutch composer and pianist. He wrote the music for over 3000 songs, for many artists (like Wim Sonneveld and Wieteke van Dort), songs and musicals written by Annie M.G. Schmidt, theater shows, radio- and tv-shows, and radio- and tv-shows for children. He is widely considered the best composer for cabaret, television shows and stage songs.
