Dutch song Willy Walden - Als op het Leidseplein
with lyrics, music, video and English translation songtext

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

See the splendour of the moon, it's light is so faint
But I still can see your beauty in this dark night
Until now we're only dreaming, here hand in hand
Once lights will shine again

Maantje in haar volle luister is weer present
Laat mij zien, hier in het duister, hoe mooi jij bent
Samen zitten wij te dromen, hier hand in hand
Tot eens het licht weer brandt

When on the Leidseplein the lights will shine again one day
And all the streets are lit and cosy once again
At Lido restaurant all blackout curtains are removed
We'll go downtown to watch the fairytale, my dear

Als op het Leidseplein de lichtjes weer eens branden gaan
En 't is gezellig op het asfalt in de stad
En bij het Lido zijn de blinden voor het raam vandaan
Dan gaan we kijken naar het sprookje, lieve schat

picture garland guirlande symbol of dutch song translated English translation

So arm in arm, you and me
Joyful laughing all around
As happy as a child, because the lights are on

Zo arm in arm, jij en ik
Lachende naar alle kant
Als kinderen zo blij, omdat het licht weer brandt

Happy people get together in every pub
They can see us walk together and laugh along
And the moon can go a whole month on holiday
In our dream at least

Blije mensen voor de ruiten van elk café
Zien ons samen gaan daarbuiten en lachen mee
En het maantje mag een maandje in onze laan
Weer met vakantie gaan

Willy Walden (1905-2003), stage name of Herman Kaldewaaij, was a revue artist and later radio host from Amsterdam. After several revues, he was asked to be a cast member of the radio programme The colourful tuesday evening train/De bonte dinsdagavondtrein (1948-1957).

Willy Walden and singer Piet Muijselaar (1899-1978) made an act as the duo Snip and Snap (dressed up as ladies). It was such a success, that the act for just one night, became a complete revue in the theatres - that lasted for forty years (1937-1977). Above song was sung for the first time in the Snip and Snap revue Cluck cluck cluck, another egg/Tok tok tok, alweer een ei (1943).

Willy Walden had just one big hit, during the Second World War: above song 'When on the Leidseplein'/'Als op het Leidseplein' (1943). The Leidseplein is a busy, well-known square in Amsterdam, in the old inner city. It has several theatres and cafes. The Netherlands were occupied by Nazi-Germany from 1940-1945.

In the song a man and his girlfriend are dreaming about the end of the war, about peace. The blackout (darkening streets and houses) will be over, the street lights will burn again and the streets will be busy again in the evening. The Nazi-occupiers didn't forbid the song, because in their view the lights would burn again after their victory.

The song was written by Jacques van Tol (1897-1969). He was the regular lyricist for Louis Davids and Snip & Snap, with famous songs like (besides above song): 'To the bulb fields'/'Naar de bollen' (1936); 'On the Grebbeberg'/'Op de Grebbeberg' (1940); and 'I've forgotten your name'/'Hoe je heette' (1954).

Cor Steyn (1906-1965) was a pianist and composer. After the conservatory he started to play the piano with silent movies. Later he wrote film music, worked for radio and television and accompanied many artists in their shows. He also composed the song 'Two clothes moths' (1956).
