        Tom (5 years old)

Under trees so big and giant
in the forest of the gnomes
is a nice and little cottage
between tree roots on the moss.

        Onder hele hoge bomen
        in het groot kabouterbos
staat een heel klein aardig huisje
        zomaar midden op het mos.

I would really like to live there
it's a pity I'm too big.
It was made for little gnomes, who
wear red jackets and red caps.

'k Zou er graag in willen wonen
maar ik ben toch veel te groot
't is gemaakt voor de kabouters
        met hun jasjes, mutsjes rood.

When the night falls, in the darkness
it's not scary in the wood.
All the little gnomes are sitting
all together having fun.

Als het nacht is en heel donker
        is het helemaal niet naar
        want dan zitten de kabouters
        heel gezellig bij elkaar.

On a tiny chair they're sitting
with a candle in their hand
so you see these lights all shining
in this gnomes and fairies land.

Ieder zit er op een stoeltje
met een kaarsje in zijn hand
en dan zie je allemaal lichtjes
        in kabouter-sprookjesland.

Dutch children's song with music and sheet music.

Songwriter: Herman Broekhuizen (1922-2012).
In: radio programme Kleutertje luister, 'Toddler listen' (1946-1975).

Commentary: Melody is similar to 'Oh my darling Clementine'.

This children's song is so commonly known, that most people think it is a traditional children's song.

We all make a circle now of little boys and girls
we all make a circle now of tralala.
Bow to each other, bow to each other.
Take the hand, take the hand
take the hand of your dear friend.
Take the hand, take the hand
take the hand of your dear friend.

We maken een kringetje van jongens en van meisjes
we maken een kringetje van tralala.
Maak nu een buiging, maak nu een buiging.
Bij de hand, bij de hand
pak je liefste bij de hand.

We're almost there, we're almost there
but not quite completely.
We're almost there, we're almost there
but not quite completely.

We zijn er bijna, we zijn er bijna
        maar nog niet helemaal.
We zijn er bijna, we zijn er bijna
        maar nog niet helemaal.

  Dutch children's songs with music.

Commentary: Sung during long road trips (when children ask: will it take long before we arrive...). Behind the second line 'maar nog niet helemaal', children add the naughty phrase 'kontje kaal' ('bottom bald') (as little joke, simply because of the rhyme).

Melody: Melody is the same as the song 'Oranje boven, oranje boven / Leve de koningin' ('Orange at the top / Long live the queen') a song sung for the queen since queen Wilhelmina (1880-1962).

We will not yet go home
for a long time, for a long time
we will not yet go home
'cause mother is not home.

En we gaan nog niet naar huis
nog lange niet, nog lange niet
en we gaan nog niet naar huis
        want moeder is niet thuis.

And even if she was
we still wouldn't go, still we wouldn't go
and even if she was
we still wouldn't now go home!

En al was m'n moeder thuis
dan gingen we niet, dan gingen we niet
en al was m'n moeder thuis
dan gingen we niet naar huis!

Dutch children's song translated in English.

When our pug was a little pug
he was quite good-looking still
now he will daily hum and grunt
and furthermore he bites.
Woof, yiff, woof, yiff
woof, yiff, woof, yiff
and furthermore he bites.
Now he will daily hum and grunt
and furthermore he bites.

Toen onze mop een mopje was
was hij aardig om te zien
        nu bromt hij alle dagen
        en bijt nog bovendien.
        Waf, woef, waf, woef
        waf, woef, waf, woef
        en bijt nog bovendien.
        Nu bromt hij alle dagen
        en bijt nog bovendien.

With the shining moon, with the shining moon
I climbed up the stairs right to the window frame.
And you'll never guess, no you'll never guess
birds fly like this and fish swim like this
this is a centipede shining all his shoes.
And this is one, and this is two
and this is bulky, bulky, bulky aunt Minou.
And this is straight, and that is bent
and we turn the wheel around around again
rom bom!

        rom bom!

  Dutch children's songs with music.

Commentary: Song with hand movements. Line 1-2: make cirkel with your hands. Line 3: climbing up with your hands. Line 4-5: move a raised index finger. Line 6: wave two hands, like flying. Line 7: put hands together and make swimming movement. Line 8-9: brush with one hand over the other. Line 10: put up one finger. Line 11: second finger. Line 12: arms wide round waist, move shoulders. Line 12: arm straight forewards. Line 13: bent arm. Line 14: rotate two hands around each other. Line 15: slap on knees two times.

Origins: This children's song is derived from an eighteen-century folk song: 'S Avonds in een klaer maene schijn, / Steek mijn de meyd in 't venster mijn' ('In the evening with the bright shining moon / Shows up the maid-servant in my window') (1733).
