Granddad Sideburns has a cottage
it is cosy, all is well.
Granddad Sideburns he is busy
can you tell me what he does?

        Opa Bakkebaard heeft een huisje
en in dat huisje daar is het goed.
Opa Bakkebaard is aan 't werken
en weet jij wel wat hij doet?

He sweeps the floor
with a besom, with a besom
he sweeps the floor
he sweeps it this way.

        Hij veegt de vloer
met een bezem, met een bezem
        hij veegt de vloer
        zo veegt hij de vloer.

Granddad Sideburns has a cottage
it is cosy, all is well.
Granddad Sideburns he is busy
can you tell me what he does?

        Opa Bakkebaard heeft een huisje
en in dat huisje daar is het goed.
Opa Bakkebaard is aan 't werken
en weet jij wel wat hij doet?

He bakes a cake
in the oven, in the oven
he bakes a cake
he bakes it this way.

        Hij bakt een taart
in de oven, in de oven
        hij bakt een taart
        zo bakt hij de taart.

He goes to bed
with a nightcap, with a nightcap
he goes to bed
he goes in this way.

        Hij gaat naar bed
met een slaapmuts, met een slaapmuts
        hij gaat naar bed
        zo gaat hij naar bed.

  Dutch children's song with music.

Songwriter: Herman Broekhuizen (1922-2012).
In: radio programme Kleutertje luister, 'Toddler listen' (1946-1975).

Commentary: children can make up daily activities for each next couplet (sometimes funny or impossible ones, like: 'he stitches his trousers with a nail'). See Dutch songtext (Songs O) for more examples.

This children's song is so commonly known, that most people think it is a traditional children's song.

Hannes wears two clogs, like
zimpe, zampe, zompe
through the water sheets, splash splash
socks and trousers getting soaked!
Mother tells him: "Stop it, Hans!"
Hansje carries on and on.
He won't listen and is stubborn!

        Hannes loopt op klompen
        zimpe, zampe, zompe
door de plassen dat het spat
        broek en kousen worden nat!
Moeder zegt: "Hans, laat dat, hoor!"
        Hannes die stapt stevig door.
        Hij laat zich niet lompen!

Dutch children's song with music and sheet music.

Lyrics: friar N. Doumen.
Music: P. Loots.
In: Levensmorgen, kinderliederen (1908).

Commentary: Old-fashioned but still well-known children's song. Song book originally printed for a Catholic orphanage for boys.

Hansje Pansje Little-bug
was climbing on a fence.
It started raining
and he was washed away.
Up came the sun
and he dried up in the beams.
Hansje Pansje Little-bug
did climb the fence again.

        Hansje Pansje kevertje
die klom eens op een hek.
        Neer viel de regen
        die spoelde Hansje weg.
        Op kwam de zon
        en die maakte Hansje droog.
        Hansje Pansje kevertje
        die klom toen weer omhoog.

Head, shoulders, knee and toe, knee and toe.
Head, shoulders, knee and toe, knee and toe.
Ears and eyes and the tip of your nose.
Head, shoulders, knee and toe, knee and toe.

Hoofd, schouders, knie en teen, knie en teen.
Hoofd, schouders, knie en teen, knie en teen.
Oren, ogen, puntje van je neus.
Hoofd, schouders, knie en teen, knie en teen.

  Dutch children's songs with music.

Commentary: Children's song with movements. The children stand up while singing. They point to the body part they sing about and on 'tip of your nose' they also turn around.

The song usually is repeated, and the last word is replaced by 'mmm'. This accumulates, so the last time it is all sung on 'mmm'. The trick is not to make mistakes.
